Tovan portable air conditioner heating a cosy room in winter on one side and cooling a sunny room in summer on the other

Can a portable air conditioner heat as well as cool?

Ours can. Every Tovan portable unit has a built in heat pump, so the same unit keeps you cool through a summer heatwave and warm on cold winter evenings. No second heater, no extra clutter.

Cools in summer

Brings a hot room down to a comfortable temperature and pushes the heat outside through the window kit.

Heats in winter

The heat pump gives up to 2.6 kWh of heat for every 1 kWh of electricity it uses, where a plug in electric heater gives just 1 kWh.

Up to 2.6 kWh of heat from 1 kWh of electricity on this 14,000 BTU model (heating rating A+).

What else does it do?

  • Dries damp air

Dehumidifier mode removes up to 2 litres of moisture an hour on this 14,000 BTU model, helping with condensation and musty rooms.

  • Quiet design

Optimised airflow and dual motors keep this model as low as 49 dB(A) on the quietest setting.

  • Sleep mode

Dims the display lights and runs gently overnight, so it suits bedrooms.

  • Self evaporating

Reuses the water it collects to help it cool, so in normal UK weather there is rarely a tank to empty.

  • Set up in minutes

Wheel it to the window, fit the window kit by hand and plug it in. No tools and no engineer.

  • Natural refrigerant

Uses R290, a natural refrigerant with a very low climate impact.

Our 14,000 BTU portable air conditioner is our most powerful portable, made for big rooms of about 25 to 35m²: living rooms, kitchen diners, loft rooms and rooms that get really hot. It is an air conditioner and a heat pump heater in one, so it cools in summer, heats in winter and dries damp air from one unit. Delivered anywhere in the UK, in white or black.

Which rooms suit a 14,000 BTU portable air conditioner?

Lounges, kitchen diners, main bedrooms and loft conversions, plus sunny south or west facing rooms. For a smaller room, the 12,000 BTU model will do the job for less.

Can a portable air conditioner cool a large living room?

Yes, if it is big enough. At 14,000 BTU (about 4 kW) this unit handles most UK living rooms. For open plan spaces over 35m² or cooling several rooms, a fitted system works better.

Can a portable air conditioner heat a room as well as cool it?

Yes. The built in heat pump gives up to 2.6 kWh of heat for every 1 kWh of electricity it uses (heating rating A+), where a plug in electric heater gives just 1 kWh. With up to 3,380 W of heat output, it warms the same rooms it cools, so you get year round comfort from one unit. Switch between cooling, heating and drying on the control panel.

What features does it have?

  • Heat pump heating for cold winter days and chilly evenings
  • Powerful cooling for summer heatwaves
  • Dehumidifier mode to dry damp air and help with condensation
  • Sleep mode that dims the display and runs gently overnight
  • Dual motors for quieter, more efficient running
  • Self evaporating water system, so there is rarely a tank to empty
  • Tool free setup with a window kit, no engineer needed

How do you set up a portable air conditioner?

No engineer needed. Wheel the unit to the window, fit the window kit, connect the exhaust hose and plug it into a normal socket. The hose carries the warm air outside, which is what cools the room.

Do I still need the window kit when it's heating?

Yes. It heats like a heat pump, taking warmth from the air and sending the leftover cold air outside through the hose. With the hose out of the window you get much more heat for the electricity it uses than a plug-in heater gives. Without it, that cold air stays in the room and cancels out most of the warmth.

Does it need emptying?

Usually not. It reuses most of the water it collects to help cool itself, so in normal UK weather you rarely need to drain it.
