Air Conditioning Running Costs and Winter Heating

Air conditioning running costs depend on electrical consumption, hours of use and your tariff. This guide explains how to calculate a bill estimate for a Kent home or business without treating the unit's cooling capacity as its electricity use.

Quick answer

Calculate electricity costs, understand heating efficiency and decide whether leaving your AC on all day makes sense.

Cooling output is not electrical input

A 2.5kW cooling label describes how much heat a system can remove under stated conditions. It does not mean it continuously draws 2.5kW from your electricity supply. Check the data for the complete indoor and outdoor pairing. Indoor fan consumption alone is not the consumption of the whole system.

Use energy consumption to calculate cost

Electricity cost = energy used in kWh × your unit rate per kWh. If you have a justified average electrical input in kW, multiply it by hours of operation to estimate kWh first. Average input changes with weather, room heat gains, settings and the equipment's operating range.

For example, an assumed average input of 0.5kW over eight hours uses 4kWh. At an illustrative tariff of 25p per kWh, that costs £1. This is arithmetic, not a measured result or promised bill for a particular model. Use the unit rate on your own bill; the example excludes standing charges.

Assumed average electrical input 8 hours at 25p/kWh 30 identical days at 8 hours a day
0.25kW £0.50 £15
0.50kW £1.00 £30
1.00kW £2.00 £60

What SEER and SCOP tell you

SEER describes seasonal cooling efficiency; SCOP describes seasonal heating efficiency under defined test conditions. Compare the same climate category and the exact equipment pairing. A SCOP of 4 describes a seasonal ratio of four units of heat to one of electricity in those conditions. It is not a guarantee of that ratio every hour or a direct prediction of your bill.

Should I leave it on all day?

There is no universal cheaper schedule. Use timers and settings around when the room is occupied and the comfort you need. An inverter can reduce output as demand falls, but maintaining a room that is empty still uses energy. Do not assume leaving it on all day costs less than switching it off. Compare consumption over similar weather, occupied hours and target temperatures if testing a schedule.

Practical ways to avoid wasted energy

  • Reduce direct sun with suitable blinds or shading before demanding more cooling.
  • Choose a comfortable target rather than the lowest or highest setting.
  • Limit avoidable heat gains from open doors and windows while retaining the ventilation the property needs. Standard split AC recirculates air; it does not provide fresh air.
  • Keep airflow paths clear. Follow the model's filter care instructions and arrange professional servicing as explained in our servicing guide.
  • Check how rooms on a shared outdoor unit will be used together. Our multi room guide explains shared output and operating modes.

Can I use my air conditioning for heating in winter?

Reversible air conditioning transfers heat from outside into the room. Its heating output and efficiency depend on outdoor conditions and the matched equipment. Defrost can temporarily interrupt heating. If this is your main heat source, have winter heat loss and low temperature output checked, rather than relying on the summer cooling size. If you are still deciding between a cooling only unit and one that also heats, see our guide to choosing cooling only or heating and cooling. Ordinary room systems do not normally provide tap or shower hot water. Energy Saving Trust explains air to air heat pumps.

Is it cheaper than gas heating?

Compare the cost per useful kWh of heat: electricity unit price divided by the heat pump's relevant efficiency, against gas unit price divided by the boiler's relevant efficiency. Use realistic seasonal assumptions for a seasonal comparison. Standing charges and heating one room versus the whole property can change the decision; savings are not guaranteed.

Would a fan be enough for my room?

A fan moves air; a refrigerant air conditioner transfers heat out of the room in cooling mode. If shading and moving air make you comfortable, a fan may meet the need with less equipment. Compare electrical consumption over equivalent use, rather than fan wattage against AC cooling output.

Can solar panels help with my AC running costs?

Solar generation can supply part of the demand when production coincides with use. Cloud, other household loads, inverter limits and evening use affect how much comes from the grid. Solar electricity used by AC also cannot be exported for payment at the same time, so it should not automatically be described as free cooling.

How to get a more useful estimate

Record the complete equipment pairing, tariff, room use, controller settings and measurement period. Suitable installed energy monitoring can help, but a whole home smart meter includes other loads. Ask an electrician about safe measurement where needed; never put a permanently wired system through an improvised plug in meter.
