Is air conditioning worth it for a UK home?

For the right rooms, yes. Loft conversions, top floor bedrooms, extensions with large glazed doors and garden rooms can become uncomfortable on warm days even when the rest of the house is fine. A reversible split system brings those rooms back into use all summer, and it doubles as an efficient heater in spring, autumn and winter.

It is worth trying cheaper fixes first if the problem is mild: blinds or external shading on sunny windows, and opening windows on cooler evenings. If a room is still too hot to sleep or work in, air conditioning is the reliable answer.

How much does it cost to install air conditioning in a house?

A single room wall mounted system starts from £2,149 fitted, including the indoor unit, outdoor unit, pipework, electrical connection and commissioning. Bigger rooms need a higher capacity unit, and a longer pipe route, a high level outdoor position or a condensate pump can add to the price. Tovan is not VAT registered, so there is no VAT to add.

You can see your own estimate for up to three rooms in our online quote. For a full breakdown of what an installed price should include, read our installation costs guide.

Which rooms in a house benefit most from air conditioning?

Bedrooms and loft conversions

Heat rises and collects under the roof, so loft bedrooms are usually the first room people ask us to cool. Sleeping is the priority, so we position the indoor unit to keep airflow off the bed.

Living rooms and kitchen extensions

Rooms with patio doors or bifolds take on a lot of sun. They usually need a higher capacity unit, placed so the air reaches the far end of the room.

Home offices and garden rooms

Computers, screens and a closed door make a small office warm quickly. A small unit cools it in summer and heats it in winter, often replacing a separate electric heater.

Is home air conditioning noisy?

Modern indoor units are quiet. The quietest wall mounted models are rated at around 20 dB(A) on their lowest fan speed, which is close to a whisper, and most have a night or quiet mode. Compare the indoor sound figures at the fan speed you expect to use, not only the lowest one.

The outdoor unit makes more sound than the indoor one, so its position matters. We look at nearby windows, neighbours and how sound will carry before agreeing where it goes, rather than promising silence.

Can home air conditioning heat my house in winter?

Yes. The systems we fit are air to air heat pumps, so they heat as well as cool, and they produce several units of heat for every unit of electricity used. They work well as heating for individual rooms such as extensions, garden rooms and offices.

If you want air conditioning to be the main heating for a room, tell us at the start so we can check the room's winter heat loss and the unit's output in cold weather. Our article on running costs and heating compares it with other ways to heat a room.

What about planning permission?

Most single outdoor units on Kent houses do not need a planning application, but flats, listed buildings and homes in conservation areas can. We check this before confirming your price. Our guide Do I need planning permission for air conditioning in Kent? explains the rules in full.

Can one outdoor unit cool several rooms?

Yes. For two or three rooms we quote a multi room system, where each indoor unit connects to one shared outdoor unit. That keeps the outside of your home tidier than fitting several outdoor units. Our multi room guide explains how it works and what to consider.

What do you check before installing air conditioning at home?

Every online price is an estimate until we have checked the details. Before confirming your final quote we look at:

  • Room size, glazing and how the room is used.
  • Where the indoor and outdoor units can go, including access and clearance for servicing.
  • The pipe route between them and how condensation will drain.
  • The distance to your fuse board and whether a new circuit is needed.
  • Anything that may need permission or consent.

You can send photos or book a short video call, and nothing is booked until you accept the final price. Our installation guide walks through every step.

Frequently asked questions

Which brands do you install in homes?

Our online estimate offers matched systems from Daikin, Bosch, Immergas and Haier, depending on room size. Each comes with the manufacturer's warranty plus our 12 month installation guarantee.

Does air conditioning bring in fresh air?

No. A split system cools or heats the air already in the room and filters it as it passes through. It does not replace ventilation, so keep using trickle vents or extractor fans as normal.

Which areas of Kent do you cover?

We install across Kent, including Medway, Maidstone, Canterbury, Thanet, Ashford, Folkestone, Dover, Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells and Dartford. Enter your postcode in the quote to check.
