Multi Room Air Conditioning in Kent

A multi room system cools and heats two or three rooms from one outdoor unit. It suits Kent homes where you want comfortable bedrooms and living space without fitting a row of outdoor units on the wall. Here is how it works, what it costs and the limits worth knowing before you choose.

Three indoor units that share one outdoor unit

How does multi room air conditioning work?

A standard split system pairs one indoor unit with one outdoor unit. A multi split connects several indoor units to a single, larger outdoor unit. Each indoor unit has its own refrigerant pipes, electrical connection and condensate drain, and each room has its own remote, so you can set different temperatures or switch a room off completely.

The outdoor unit uses an inverter compressor that speeds up and slows down to match demand. With one room on it runs gently; with every room on it works harder.

Is a multi split better than separate systems?

It depends on what matters most to you:

One shared outdoor unit Separate outdoor units
Outside space One unit, so less wall or ground space One unit per room
If something fails All rooms depend on one outdoor unit A refrigerant fault in one system does not stop the others
Heating and cooling All rooms run in the same mode Each room can heat or cool independently
Pipework Every room connects back to one outdoor position Each outdoor unit can sit nearer its room

For homes we quote two and three room systems with one shared outdoor unit, because it keeps the outside of the house tidy and suits the way most families use their rooms. Businesses can choose either option, as explained on our commercial page.

Can a multi split heat one room and cool another?

No. A standard reversible multi split runs every room in the same mode at the same time. If one room asks for heating while another is cooling, one of them goes into standby until the modes match. Each room can still have its own temperature setting. In practice this rarely matters at home, because rooms usually need the same thing in the same season. Daikin explains mode conflicts.

How much does multi room air conditioning cost?

A two room system with one shared outdoor unit starts from £3,449 as an estimate, subject to our installation check. Three rooms on one shared outdoor unit start from £4,749. The price includes each room's pipework, the electrical connection and £100 off every indoor unit for installs completed by 31 March 2027. Longer pipe routes to rooms on different floors or at opposite ends of the house add to the cost, and we show that per room so you can see the effect.

How do I choose which rooms to include?

  • Start with the rooms you struggle with. Most people start with the main bedroom, then add a second bedroom or the living room.
  • Size each room on its own merits. A sunny loft bedroom may need more capacity than a larger room on the shady side of the house.
  • Think about the pipe routes. Rooms close to the outdoor unit position cost less to connect.
  • Leave space to service. The outdoor unit needs clear space around it. A ground level position at the back or side of the house is usually best.

What size outdoor unit does a multi split need?

The indoor and outdoor units must form a combination the manufacturer approves, within its limits on pipe length, height difference and number of connections. Adding up the indoor unit ratings does not tell you the output each room gets when they all run at once, because the outdoor unit shares its capacity. We confirm the matched equipment and what each room can expect with every room running. Where no approved package fits, we prepare a tailored quote.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add another room later?

Sometimes, but a spare connection on the outdoor unit is not enough on its own. The extra indoor model, the approved combination, the shared capacity and the pipe limits all have to work. Tell us about future rooms before we choose the outdoor unit.

How many rooms can I price online?

Up to three. For more than three rooms, contact us and we will design the system with you.

Does a multi split cost more to run than separate systems?

Not necessarily. Running costs depend mostly on how many rooms are on and for how long. Our article on running costs shows how to work it out.

Can I mix wall mounted units with other types?

Our online quote covers wall mounted indoor units. If you want a floor standing or ceiling unit in the mix, we quote it individually.
