Why Is My Loft Room So Hot, and Will Air Conditioning Help?
A loft room that overheats needs more than a floor area calculation. Roof exposure, glazing, shading and the times you use the room can all change the cooling requirement. Air conditioning may help with comfort, but first identify which problems it needs to solve.

Quick answer
A practical order for assessing shading, roof heat, room use and AC installation in a Kent loft conversion.
Why is my loft room hotter than the rest of the house?
Describe the pattern rather than assuming one cause. Does the room heat up when direct sun reaches a roof window? Does it remain uncomfortable in the evening? Is the problem mainly around a desk or bed? A room beneath a roof with exposed glazing can behave differently from a downstairs room of the same area.
Take measurements at the times you actually use the room, noting blinds, windows and equipment in use. This is more useful for the assessment than selecting a larger unit because the space is upstairs.
Should I try shading before buying AC?
Consider practical shading and suitable ventilation first. Energy Saving Trust advises considering passive cooling measures before mechanical cooling. Discuss roof window shading and any insulation concerns with the appropriate supplier or building professional; AC should not be used to avoid investigating a building defect.
Opening a window is not always helpful when the incoming air is hotter than the room. Plan ventilation around conditions and safety. A standard split system does not supply fresh air, so the room still needs an appropriate ventilation arrangement.
Will a wall mounted unit fit under my sloping roof?
Check the actual usable wall, not just the room’s footprint. Mark the slope, headroom, fitted wardrobes and the intended airflow path. The unit needs its manufacturer’s clearances and access for servicing. A position that fits physically may still leave poor air circulation or awkward access.
If no suitable high wall exists, a floor standing system may be worth an individual assessment. It is not automatically interchangeable with a wall mounted package or its quoted price.
Does an upstairs indoor unit mean the outdoor unit must be high up?
No automatic conclusion follows from the floor number. Ask the installer to compare feasible outdoor positions, permitted pipe lengths and height differences, drainage and safe access. A ground position might work in one property while creating an unsuitable route in another.
Agree the visible trunking route and access arrangements before approving the final installation. Do not assume that a standard allowance covers specialist access equipment or every possible route.
Which equipment should I ask Tovan to assess?
Our wall mounted range includes Sensira, Climate 3200i, THOR and Revive Plus options, but the right package depends on the assessed load and installation. Do not choose a 5 kW unit simply because the room is in the roof. If heating is important, request a separate winter performance assessment.
Send roof window photographs, room dimensions, ceiling slopes, existing shading and your preferred indoor position. Use our Kent installation questionnaire for an estimate, with the final equipment and scope confirmed after the installation check.
