Portable or Wall Mounted Air Conditioning: Which Fits Your Home?
A portable air conditioner can be a sensible choice for occasional use. A fitted split system deserves consideration when the same room needs cooling regularly. Decide using your room, permissions, noise tolerance and expected use rather than a promise that one option is always cheaper.

Quick answer
Compare the everyday compromises of portable and installed AC without assuming the most expensive option is right for everyone.
When does a portable unit make sense for my home?
Consider a portable when you cannot obtain permission for a permanent installation, expect to move soon or need temporary cooling. Check the exhaust arrangement before purchase. A conventional unit with an exhaust hose needs a suitable route for rejecting heat, and the window kit must suit the actual opening.
Measure the space it occupies, including the hose route and clearance. Think about storage outside summer and whether you can move it safely between rooms. A unit on wheels does not necessarily offer convenient whole home cooling.
What changes if I choose a wall mounted split system?
The compressor is outdoors and the indoor unit remains fixed to the wall. That changes indoor noise and removes the portable exhaust hose from the window. Installation involves refrigerant pipework, electrical connections and drainage, with an outdoor position to agree.
Tovan offers fitted options including Daikin Sensira, Bosch Climate 3200i, Immergas THOR and Haier Revive Plus. Compare the actual package offered, not a loose indoor unit advertised online. Floor standing and cassette systems follow a different assessment.
How should I compare running costs?
Compare electrical energy used for the room and hours that matter to you. Cooling capacity in kW is not the system’s electricity consumption. Do not compare a portable’s electrical input directly with a split system’s cooling output.
A price premium is not proof of a payback period. To estimate one, you would need credible consumption assumptions, your tariff, usage and the difference in installed cost. Our running costs guide explains the calculation without promising a universal bill.
What should I check before choosing?
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Can I alter the property? | A lease, landlord or building restrictions may affect a permanent installation. |
| Where does rejected heat go? | Check the portable exhaust arrangement or the split system’s outdoor position. |
| What noise can I tolerate? | Compare equivalent operating settings and the compressor location. |
| How many rooms need cooling? | One unit does not guarantee controlled temperatures behind several closed doors. |
| Who maintains it? | Follow the exact manual and account for professional servicing where required. |
Can I install a split system myself?
Do not treat a split system containing F gas as a DIY alternative to a portable. The refrigerant work requires the appropriate qualifications and applicable company certification. Ask who will carry out the work and verify the credentials, rather than relying on a logo alone.
If a permanent system suits your Kent home, get an estimated installed price. If it does not, choosing a portable or improving shading can be a reasonable decision.
