Can Air Conditioning Cause Mould?

Air conditioning can remove moisture while cooling, but it is not a cure for damp or mould. A poorly maintained unit or a drainage problem can also create unwanted moisture. The useful question is where the mould or water is appearing: on the room’s walls, inside the equipment, or around the installation.

Quick answer

Understand AC moisture, musty smells and indoor leaks, with safe next steps for Kent homeowners and a clear boundary between owner care and engineer work.

Does air conditioning make a room damp?

In cooling mode, room air passes over a cold indoor coil. Moisture can condense on it and should leave through the condensate drain. This is different from water leaking into the room. How much moisture is removed depends on the conditions, equipment and operation; ordinary cooling does not guarantee a particular humidity.

A standard wall mounted split system mainly recirculates indoor air. It does not replace bathroom extraction, kitchen extraction or the home’s fresh air ventilation.

Will my AC get rid of the mould on my bedroom walls?

No. Cooling or dehumidification may help control moisture, but it will not repair a leaking roof, penetrating damp or an inadequately ventilated room. Existing mould needs its cause investigated and dealt with. Painting over a patch or fitting an AC unit without identifying the moisture source can leave the underlying problem unresolved.

In a Kent bedroom or home office, tell the installer about existing staining, condensation and any known leaks before equipment is positioned. A cooling survey and a building damp investigation serve different purposes.

Why does my air conditioner smell musty?

A smell alone does not prove mould. Daikin notes that units can redistribute odours absorbed from the room, and dirty filters can contribute to unpleasant smells. Persistent odour, visible contamination or reduced performance warrants an inspection rather than a guess based on smell.

Record when it happens: on startup, only during cooling, or continuously. Tell the engineer about recent leaks or long periods without use. Do not spray perfume, bleach or household cleaner into the outlet to disguise it.

Is it normal for water to drip from my indoor unit?

Water leaking indoors needs attention. Stop using the system and contact the installer. Drainage obstructions or a problem elsewhere in the drainage route can cause leakage; the actual cause needs checking. Keep clear of water near electrical equipment and follow safe shutdown instructions only where safe to do so.

Do not push wire into a drain, disconnect pipework or remove panels. Our fault checks guide explains what information to record without attempting repairs.

Will heating mode or dry mode solve condensation?

Heating can warm room surfaces, but warming air does not itself remove the moisture it contains. Dry mode uses an operating cycle specific to the model to remove moisture and may also cool the room. It is not a substitute for repairing leaks or maintaining suitable ventilation. Follow the operating limits in your manual, particularly in a cool room.

For energy calculations rather than damp diagnosis, see our running costs and winter heating article.

What can I safely do myself?

Follow your exact manual for permitted filter care and external cleaning. Leave internal coils, fans, drain trays, pumps and electrical compartments to a professional. If your model has a drying or mould prevention cycle, follow its instructions; do not assume another model’s settings apply.

Use our Safe Owner Care guide for the boundary between routine care and servicing. Annual professional servicing is needed to keep the manufacturer's warranty valid; owner cleaning does not replace it.

Who should I contact about mould or moisture?

  • Water or persistent odour from the AC: contact the installer or service engineer.
  • Recurring wall or ceiling mould, or suspected building leaks: arrange an appropriate building investigation; tenants should report it to their landlord.
  • Planning a new system: explain existing damp concerns before choosing equipment. Do not buy AC on a promise that it will cure mould.
