Does air conditioning need servicing?
Yes. Dust, pollen, pet hair and kitchen grease build up on filters and coils over time. The system then works harder for the same result, which raises running costs and can lead to smells, dripping or breakdowns. A service spots problems such as a blocked drain or a loose connection early, although no service can guarantee a fault will never happen.
What happens during an air conditioning service?
A typical annual service covers:
- Cleaning or replacing the indoor filters.
- Cleaning the indoor coil and fan, and treating them where needed to prevent odours.
- Checking and flushing the condensate drain, and testing any condensate pump.
- Cleaning the outdoor unit's coil and clearing debris.
- Checking electrical connections, the isolator and controls.
- Checking the system runs correctly and looking for signs of leaks. Gauges are only connected to the refrigerant circuit when there is a reason to.
- Recording the visit for your manufacturer's warranty records.

What can I do myself between services?
Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves and plants, never cover it while it is running, and clean the filters only as your manual allows. Our safe owner care guide explains exactly what is safe, and our checks before contacting us cover warning signs such as dripping, unusual noises or ice on the pipes.
Does air conditioning near the sea need more servicing?
Often, yes. Outdoor units near the coast, from Thanet to Folkestone and Deal, are exposed to salt that corrodes coils and fins. Units in rural areas collect leaves, seeds and insects. In both cases, cleaning the outdoor coil regularly matters even more, and we may suggest checking it more often.
Who is allowed to work on air conditioning refrigerant?
Most modern split systems use a refrigerant called R32. In Great Britain, work on refrigerant circuits must be carried out by engineers with the right F Gas qualification, working for a certified company. Whether a system needs regular leak checks by law depends on the refrigerant type and how much it holds, and we will tell you if that applies to yours.
How do my warranties work?
Every installation comes with our 12 month installation guarantee (parts and labour for installation faults) and the manufacturer's warranty, which we make sure is registered. The manufacturer's warranty needs an annual service by an F Gas certified engineer. Servicing is not included in the price.
- Our 12 month installation guarantee is given by Tovan. It covers parts and labour for faults in our installation work, such as pipework, joints, seals and drains. It does not depend on servicing.
- The manufacturer's warranty is given by the manufacturer. Its length and what it covers depend on the brand and model, and your final quote confirms them. Have the system serviced every year and keep the records, because the manufacturer may ask to see them.
- Your legal rights are not affected. Both covers are in addition to your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Read the full Tovan Installation Guarantee & Manufacturer Warranty terms.

Once a year for homes and most offices. Busy commercial spaces, kitchens and salons may benefit from more frequent filter cleaning or a service every six months.
When is the best time to service air conditioning?
Spring is ideal, before the hot weather, but any time of year works. What matters is a service every twelve months.
Do you service systems you did not install?
Contact us with the make and model and we will let you know. Our 12 month installation guarantee covers only systems we installed.
