Why Are Two Air Conditioning Installation Quotes So Different?
Two AC prices are only comparable when they cover equivalent equipment and work. A low headline total might reflect a simpler route, different capacity or fewer inclusions. A higher price still needs an explanation; it is not automatically better workmanship.

Quick answer
A practical checklist for comparing equipment, fitting scope, electrical work and warranty before accepting an AC quote.
Am I comparing the same indoor and outdoor equipment?
Ask for both model numbers, rated capacity and the proposed configuration. A single room system and three indoor units sharing one outdoor unit are different designs. A similar looking indoor casing does not prove the outdoor pairing is equivalent.
For Tovan packages, distinguish Daikin Sensira single room options from the compatible range selected for a shared installation. Apply the same check to Bosch Climate 3200i, Immergas THOR and Haier Revive Plus. Compare the equipment on your actual quote rather than a general brand description.
What installation details should I get in writing?
- Pipe route: the assumed distance, visible trunking and what happens if the agreed route changes.
- Drainage: where condensate goes and whether a pump is included or required.
- Electrical work: the supply arrangement and the work included, subject to assessment.
- Outdoor mounting: the position, supports, access and any specialist access equipment.
- Finishing: what is included for making good, waste removal and redecoration.
Ask both installers to price the same agreed positions. Otherwise you may be comparing different jobs while thinking only the equipment price has changed.
Are app controls and accessories included in my quote?
Check the exact controller and any connectivity accessories. Bosch states that Climate 3200i smart connectivity requires an additional accessory. Do not assume that an app advertised for a range is included in every fitted package. Ask for an itemised answer if WiFi control is important to you.
Can I use Checkatrade prices as a benchmark?
Checkatrade publishes broad installation averages and separates equipment, fitting and potential extras. That is useful context, not a fixed Kent tariff or verification of your quote. Compare the scope and date of any national estimate before using it to judge a specific job.
Likewise, an iHeat or BOXT starting price is meaningful only for its stated package and conditions. An external guide does not approve Tovan’s work or provide a warranty on it.
How should I compare warranties?
Ask who provides the cover and what includes parts, labour or visits. Tovan gives a 12 month installation guarantee on parts and labour for its installation work. The manufacturer's warranty is separate and is set by the brand. Request service costs and claim procedures before accepting; do not assume the longest headline period means every cost is included.
What evidence should I request before paying?
Ask for the relevant individual F gas qualification and company certification for the business doing the refrigerant installation. Check the written equipment schedule, payment stages, final scope, applicable VAT and cancellation terms. Look for genuine examples and reviews of comparable work, without treating a badge as a substitute for checking.
Tovan’s online figure is an estimate until the installation details are checked and the final price is confirmed before payment. Read our installation costs guide, ask about your proposed scope or start a quote.
